The US government has reimbursed around $100 billion in tariffs initially collected under former President Donald Trump’s trade policies known as “Liberation Day.” This action follows a Supreme Court ruling that deemed a substantial portion of these tariffs unlawful. The refunded amount represents about 60% of the total $165 billion gathered before the court’s decision was made. These tariffs were a key element of Trump’s trade strategy, which aimed to enhance domestic manufacturing, secure advantageous trade agreements, and boost government revenue.
In light of the Supreme Court’s ruling, the administration began returning the tariffs to the companies affected. Despite this significant refund, the federal budget deficit has not improved, ballooning to $1.37 trillion in the first nine months of the fiscal year. This growing deficit highlights ongoing fiscal challenges facing the government.
Despite the setback from the court’s decision, the Trump administration proceeded to implement a new series of tariffs last month. These tariffs, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, target imports from over 80 countries, including major economies such as India, China, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and the European Union. The administration justified these measures by citing concerns over products allegedly tied to forced labor.
The latest round of tariffs has sparked new legal opposition. A coalition of 25 US states is challenging these measures, arguing that they unlawfully replace the previously invalidated tariffs. This legal battle underscores the ongoing contentious nature of trade policy and its significant impact on international relations and domestic economic policy.
