In a strategic move to enhance robotics and artificial intelligence applications, South Korea’s LG Innotek has teamed up with Japanese firm TDK to develop advanced vision and tactile sensing modules. This collaboration brings together LG Innotek’s expertise in optical and precision engineering with TDK’s cutting-edge sensor technology. The partnership aims to create sophisticated systems that will significantly improve the interaction between robots and their environments.

The first major product to emerge from this collaboration is a vision sensing module, set for release in 2027. This innovative system will incorporate an inertial sensor, allowing it to seamlessly blend visual, motion, direction, and sound data. The integration of these elements is expected to enhance a robot’s ability to perceive and react to its surroundings, minimizing issues like image distortion due to movement.

Alongside this, the two companies are working on a tactile sensing module designed to mimic the functions of human skin. Scheduled for completion in 2027 as well, this module will enable robots to detect touch and pressure, enhancing their ability to interact physically with their environment using their hands, arms, and bodies. This development is anticipated to open new possibilities in how robots can perform tasks that require a delicate touch.
